Sotheby’s Brussels proudly hosted an exclusive event on 19 November to honor the Françoise Mayer and Marc Sohier Collection.
The event commemorated the influential legacy of Françoise Mayer’s gallery, which opened its doors exactly 58 years ago, celebrating its impact on modern art movements like American Abstract Expressionism, Spatialism, and Kinetic Art. The works in this collection form an ensemble of rare coherence, giving pride of place to abstraction and research into American Abstract Expressionism, Spatialism, and Kinetic Art.
Following in the footsteps of Iris Clert for New Realism and Denise René for Kinetic Art, the Françoise Mayer Gallery was a key promoter of new artistic research and a fundamental support for the artists it presented.
The gallery first opened its doors on 19 November 1966 in Brussels, with an inaugural exhibition devoted to Alexander Calder. Françoise Mayer’s career as a broadcaster and producer of cultural television programs in Belgium enabled her to meet artists and collectors of contemporary art. Over the ten years of the gallery’s existence (1966–1975), twenty-eight exhibitions by major artists followed one after another: Lucio Fontana, Jesus-Rafael Soto, Alexander Calder, Pol Bury, to name a few.
We gladly invite you to discover a selection of the collection at Sotheby’s Brussels, open to the public from 18 to 22 November. This exhibition offers an opportunity to explore a curated selection of works from this remarkable collection.
The sale of the collection will take place in Paris on 4 December, presenting a unique chance for art enthusiasts and collectors to acquire pieces from this extraordinary legacy.
