Poésie des couleurs, le monde selon Jean Messagier
Discover the work of French master Jean Messagier at Sotheby's until 5 April 2024.

Jean Messagier (1920–1999) was a versatile French artist known for his work as a painter, sculptor, printmaker, and poet. Influenced by notable figures such as Picasso, Masson, Klee, and Desnoyer, he initially explored expressionistic post-Cubism. However, he later transitioned to a more personal style, drawing inspiration from artists like Jean Fautrier (1898-1964) and Pierre Tal-Coat (1905-1985).

Often associated with various artistic movements like lyrical abstraction, tachism and Art Informel, Messagier resisted labels and refused to distinguish between abstraction and figuration. Throughout his career, he exhibited extensively in France and abroad, representing new trends in French painting.

Messagier’s early life saw him split between Paris and Franche-Comté, where he began creating representational watercolors and drawings. He exhibited his work for the first time in 1947 at the Arc-en-Ciel gallery in Paris.

His artistic path led him gradually to trying different styles with the use of different techniques and different mediums, incorporating for example elements of symmetry and monochrome. His paintings evolved into vast, dream-like landscapes, reflecting his deep connection to nature and light.

He represented France at prestigious events like the Venice Biennale and received recognition for his contributions to art, including the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres.

In the midst of artistic debates about abstraction versus figuration, Messagier sought to transcend these distinctions, embracing a holistic approach that merged human creativity with the natural world. His legacy endures as a testament to his lifelong exploration of the artistic process and its connection to life and nature.
