Last January, Sotheby’s and MAD Brussels launched a call for projects, giving a young Belgian designer carte blanche to create a summer scenography. The jury, made up of Anaïs Carion, Managing Director of MAD Brussels, Dieter Van Den Storm, Artistic Director of MAD Brussels and Gwendolyn Grolig, Director of Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s selected the proposal from HIER, composed of Thea Hallak, Thomas Billas and their team.
HIER designed a two-metre-high, five-tiered birthday cake, symbolising the five decades of Sotheby’s in Belgium and its sales departments. The materials used come from donations from Belgian partners such as Thy Marcinelle, Rotor DC, Niyona, Chez Rosi and Oxfam, integrating a sustainable and circular approach.
